Message from the Division Chief

Dear Colleagues, Prospective Fellows, and Community Partners,

I am delighted to welcome you to the Wayne State University Division of Infectious Diseases. Our division represents a generation of infectious disease specialists passionate about making a difference in patients' lives and our community. We deliver compassionate, individualized care that recognizes each person's unique journey while confronting health inequities.  Whether you are a patient seeking to understand our services, a referring physician seeking consultation for complex infections, a prospective trainee considering a career in infectious diseases, or a research collaborator exploring partnership opportunities, our team brings clinical expertise and unwavering dedication to ensuring all individuals receive the respect, dignity, and expert care they deserve.

Our clinical training and care delivery span three major healthcare systems: Detroit Medical Center, Karmanos Cancer Institute, and the Veterans Administration Hospital of Detroit. These partnerships expose our fellows and faculty to diverse patient populations and complex infectious disease challenges. We are proud of our leadership in expanding telemedicine, specialty clinics, and transitions of care initiatives to meet evolving patient needs.

We accept four fellows each year into our two-year infectious diseases training program and have trained over 80 fellows since our program was established in the early 1990s. Our dedicated clinician educators cultivate the infectious disease leaders of tomorrow through rigorous clinical training, mentored research opportunities, and comprehensive educational experiences that emphasize both clinical mastery and the development of empathetic healthcare professionals who will serve in varied practice settings with distinction.

Our research endeavors span clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, clinical trials, and trainee development. Our faculty pursue research in HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, tuberculosis, infection prevention and control, gram-negative resistance, transplant-associated infections, and general infectious diseases. Through implementation science and population health approaches, we ensure our scholarship translates into scalable interventions that improve health outcomes across communities.

Collaborative engagement with our community lies at the heart of our work. We maintain active partnerships with the City of Detroit and the State of Michigan on communicable disease initiatives. Our division functions as a trusted resource for HIV, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted infections care excellence, and we are particularly proud of our collaborations with the Detroit Health Department and leadership in public health programs that improve access and outcomes for our most vulnerable populations.

We are honored to join our infectious disease colleagues worldwide in this essential work, from combating community outbreaks and ending the HIV and epidemic to educating patients and providers with accurate, science-based information.
