Division Chief and Professor Jack Sobel focuses his research on HIV/AIDS.

Active Grants:

  • NIH – CPCRA Clinical Trials Unit to George Washington University in support of AIDS.
  • Ryan White Care HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act – Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion.
  • HRSA – Outpatient Early Intervention Services (EIS) with Respect to HIV Disease.
  • Johnson & Johnson. Focused giving grant. PCR-based analysis of dynamic changes in vaginal bacteriophage and bacterial species in women with recurrent bacterial vaginosis.
  • Merck – A randomized double blind placebo controlled trial of caspofungin vs. placebo as prophylaxis of invasive candidiasis in high risk adults in the critical care.
  • Abbott Research Group – A clinical study of treatment of symptomatic bacterial vaginosis with water works douching device versus non-treatment.
  • Presutti Laboratories – A phase 3 randomized, multi-center, double-blind, double-dummy, placebo-controlled treatment trial of bacterial vaginosis with tinidazole oral tablets.

Recent Awards:

  • Pfizer Research Award. An analysis of voriconazole resistance mechanisms using a high copy plasmid transformation system in Candida albicans.
  • Best Doctors 2008 award for southeastern Michigan.

Facilities:
The Wayne State University laboratory is located in the Lande Building with 1200 square feet of bench space and an additional 200 square feet in an adjacent 350 with a walk-in cold room.

Separate sections of 356 are used for radioisotope and for media preparation.
